How we’re making a difference
Our Donations at Work: Iraq Veterans Against the War
Last year, members helped raise over $3 million for nonprofit groups dedicated to making our world a better place. Groups like Iraq Veterans Against the War, which works for immediate troop withdrawal and for adequate benefits for Iraq veterans. The Bush administration spends $3 billion a week on the Iraq war but virtually nothing on returning soldiers. That’s part of the reason why 18 veterans commit suicide every day. And why 25% of the homeless people in America are veterans. Iraq Veterans Against the War is just one of the many worthy nonprofits you support as a member of CREDO/Working Assets.
Making Your Voice Heard: Big Win in a Dirty War
There are many adversaries in the fight against global warming. Coal is public enemy number one. Coal-fired utilities spew 40% of America’s C02 emissions. So when a number of states geared up to build new coal-burning power plants — at a time they should be investing in clean-energy alternatives — we asked you to take action. And you responded. You directed thousands of calls, e-mails and letters to governors and state legislators in 15 different states, urging them to scrub their new coal-fired plants. Florida, Iowa and Kansas all halted plans for new coal-burning plants. Texas called off eight plants. Thanks to you, our planet may soon be a little cooler.
